A Brief History of Christian Films: 1918-2002

Although he was not aware of it, plans to make religious films independent of commercial studios had been underway for years before the American poet made his statement in 1922. Yet it would be nearly 20 years before an independent Christian filmmaking movement had any degree of success, financial or aesthetic. This brief summary of the history of religious filmmaking will look at 2 such pioneers, whose vastly differing ideas about the role of these films and their audiences have influenced every Christian film-maker of the last 6 decades.
