Other nifty sites...

A wise person once told me that "the Web is magic crap" and so, below are some links that share the A/V Geeks' odd interests and fetishes...

Dennis Nyback also collects, curates and tours with fascinating film programs. Visit him here.

Sites about collecting and preserving film (16mm, super 8, 35mm, etc.)

http://www.filmforever.org This site provides simple guidelines for preserving motion picture film materials outside of specialized archives, with a focus on storage at home. This is a good resource for the beginner collector on the basics of film preservation - including your home movies.

www.16mmfilms.com A great starting point for film collecting with plenty of links to other collectors and services. Buy a t-shirt while you're at it.

Film Collector's Reference Center Another great place to start, this site has some great technical information.

Cinema Dementia Chicago's Chip Hess collects old horror movies. You can buy video dubs of some of them!

Other alternative/lo-fi/underground cinema

In the Triangle...

Flicker in Carrboro, NC. A bi-monthly showcase of regional (and beyond) filmmakers at the Cat's Cradle. The medium of choice is super 8. More down to earth than similar showcases, because the audience is encouraged to do their own films with the Flicker grant.

Glitter Films in Raleigh, NC. A bimonthly show of various types of films and film formats - featuring local indie filmmakers and nifty shorts from bygone days.

In North Carolina...

Film Nite in Wilmington, NC. A monthly screening of shorts - some independent, some educational, some industrial and some inexplicable, but always entertaining.

Other states...

Flicker in Richmond, VA. An offshoot from the North Carolina show, but just as nifty.

Aurora Picture Show in Houston, TX. They offer unique monthly film programs you won't see anywhere else. Plus it's held in an old church!! Man, I'm jealous!

Other Cinema in San Francisco, CA. Housed in an old bakery in the Mission District, Craig Baldwin and others put together the most amazing and odd weekly film programs you'd ever hope to see. A reason to move to San Francisco, this is what I want to do when I grow...

Cine16 in San Jose, CA. An alternative cinema almost entirely dedicated to educational films and documentaries. A mirror to the A/V Geeks, although curator Geoff Alexander has been doing it longer and taking exquisite notes. Visit this site to learn about the films and to learn how to put on your own shows.
