They made this EXACT same film, word for word, back in 1947.

Yep, the 1958 version is a very uninspired remake.
Yea, whats up with their late 50′s films. A lot of them seemed to take a dive in film and acting quality. The earlier Coronet films had a real production quality to them, but the later ones just seem like there was a real lack of money or they just didn’t care anymore. Shame.

With the Coronet films, two things could be happening to cause the drop in quality.
1 – David Smart, the founder of Coronet Films, died. I believe his brother took over and he probably didn’t have the same drive and vision that David did..
2 – They probably got sloppy with some of these revised films – “Hey, we’ve already got the script, just use a new batch of teens wearing the latest in teen clothing and hairstyles and we can remake it on the cheap. Oh and let the new guy direct this one…”

I think you’re right on the money. The death of Mr. Smart was probably the initial catalyst that caused the decline of “Coronet Films”. Everything just seemed to go downhill from there.
