Recounts the life of Chester Ronning, who at various times of his life was a horse-breaker, a homesteader, diplomat, politician and teacher. Describes his youth in China where he lived through the Boxer Rebellion and the civil war. Relates that he subsequently became a teacher in Alberta and as a diplomat tried to bring to the West an understanding of China.
