Depicts experiences with ‘PREJUDICE’ encountered by a girl and her dog, Skipper, who move into a neighborhood where children of different races play together. ” B W 1952
A well-intentioned but just plain weird educational film about
racism, constructed as a parable, with dogs as stand-ins for
bigoted humans and their victims. After a new girl moves into the
neighborhood, all the children invite her to play, including a
black boy and an Asian girl. Her dog, Skipper, is similarly
welcomed by the local dog pack – but he doesn’t like the looks of
the dogs, and drives them from his doorstep. Wandering into a
garage, he finds himself covered with paint, and when he tries to
make amends with the local dogs, they reject him. (It’s not clear,
however, if they reject him because of his coat of paint or his
snooty attitude of a few moments before – this should be a critical
point, but it’s completely fudged in this morally hazy film). The
neighborhood children give Skipper a bath, and he goes around and
begs forgiveness of the other dogs. The best stock shots are CU
shots of dogs and a good sequence of children washing a dog. The
shots of children of different races playing together don’t really
read as such.
