Why Study Home Economics? (1955)

Janice and Carol are trying to decide on their next year’s high school classes and are at odds about the usefulness of home economics. Carol thinks that what her mom taught her should be enough for her to “get by”. Janice thinks otherwise – wanting to truly be prepared when she gets married. The home economics teacher reinforces this by claiming that a busy mother wouldn’t have time to keep house, learn about the latest things AND teach her daughter about homemaking. “Anyone who’s going to be married and a homemaker would be foolish NOT to take Home Economics!” Although, homemaking was generally considered THE career path for girls of that time, nowadays, everybody could benefit from learning about home budgeting, thriftiness, food preparation and nutrition in culture that is having problems coping with obesity and finances.
